Teaching Philosophy
Kayla is a passionate individual and expects the same from her dancers. She has many tools that she uses to achieve this high efficiency in each class and one that her dancers respect. She always gives positive feedback and support of each student she trains, as-well-as individual attention in each class. Kayla believes it is important for one to know their strengths and how they can build from that. Keeping in mind, it is also important to give feedback on areas in-need-of improvement. Depending on the level will depend on the detail and the precision that is expected of the dancer. For instant a beginner may be working on how to demonstrate and apply the vocabulary within the class, where as a more advanced dancer may be finding ways to demonstrate the vocabulary within the context of musicality on a performance level. Over time by working with Kayla the information gets more specific and the concepts become more clear in each dancer.
Understanding that each individual progresses at their own rate, Kayla likes to use imagery and imagination to connect to the movement. For kids this is what makes dance so fun! They love exploring their imagination! But adults can use imagery for the same reasons. It creates ease in the body necessary to move, as well as body awareness that can be used in many different aspects of life. Being anatomically aware can prevent injuries, which is also important in the longevity of a dancers' career.
Artistry starts at any age a person is willing to accept and take responsibility for their work. Kayla believes in teaching in a way that the dancer can always have an artistic voice. Her choreography and class allows for individual expression so that each dancer is unique. She trains her students to understand the impulse behind each action and that all movement has a purpose. Her objective is for the dancer to be clear in the initiation of each step, but once she sees they understand that, she allows for them to take their dancing to the next level. Releasing emotion, freedom, and creativity within the context of the choreography. Her goal is to create meaningful and expressive dancers who in turn become artists.
